Photography week 1 - Future Memories

Lighting

Throughout the course of this week we have been taught various techniques to combine with our photography. One of the main focuses of the week was different lighting that could be used within photography. The two main lighting sources that we focused on consists of natural light and artificial (studio) lighting.

Natural Lighting

For this task I went outside around ravensbourne trying to find good spots of natural light that could make my images affective. Unfortunately the day was rather dull, therefore I had to wait around a lot for the right moment to capture an image. I decided to focus on the views around ravensbourne and how the sunlight affected buildings/sculptures etc.

I thought this view was particularly striking. When the sun rarely came out, I thought that the clouds made the sky look amazing, in contrast the objects at ground level became very dark and were more like silhouettes, however I thought this would make a good image. Although I had to wait a while until the sun came out I eventually managed to capture my desired shot.  I think this image works well because there is nothing to distract the viewers gaze away from the sky because the light has made all ground level objects shadowed, therefore less obvious. However I think the shadowed trees etc make the image have a more mysterious feel to it.

Again to capture this image I had to wait a while for the sun to come out and hit the statue at the right moment. I think that the sunlight adds more depth to the image as it highlights the right side of the statue. Where as in contrast the left side is much more darker, however the contrast of the opposite side compliment each other nicely. Again the contrasts in colours in the clouds makes the image much more striking. To capture this image I stood directly underneath it, the structure of the statue, directly leads the views gaze to the furtherest point which eventually disappears into the distance.
