A man amongst wolves is a documentary by National Geographic, focusing on Shaun Ellis and his experience with raising 3 wolf cubs and living with them.
Shaun focuses on how to respect animals that we live with. His aim is to find ways for man and wolf to live together in harmony. The documentary focuses on Shaun raising 3 wolf cubs who were rejected by there mother at 4 days old.
One of Shaun's belief with raising these cubs, is that he will be able to learn the ways of the wolf and by doing so they can teach him their secrets. Which will hopefully enable him to save them. After living with the wolves for some time Shaun noticed that his immune system improved a lot. He states 'nature prepares you, you need discipline, strength and stamina.
For Shaun gaining acceptance was the main thing, he didn't start out naive. With shaun being the cubs nurturer, he was also the cubs teacher and lived, slept and ate with them. To feed the cubs like a wolf mother would, shaun would hide meat in his pockets, put it in his mouth, chew it and then let the cubs eat from his mouth. By having this close bond with the cubs Shaun is able to gain animal behaviours that cannot be learnt from afar.
The documentary also shows Shaun's work with farmers in Poland. Since 1998 it has been illegal to shoot wolves in Poland. However a lot of farmers are having trouble with wolves killing their livestock. The film shows Shaun teaching a farmer in Poland a method that he has come up with, to prevent wolves attacking livestock. Shaun recorded wolves howling and played the sound directional from the farm, in theory this should make any wolves in the area feel threatened, thinking that there is another wolf pack in the area. So far this method has proved to be very successful.
