Sound design- Week 1

This week we started a new project, sound design. Sound is a very vital part used in film, however is something that I haven't ever had the opportunity to explore. I was looking forward to experimenting with different sound techniques. However once finding out that we had to tell a story through only sound I began to think that this task could be harder than anticipated. Following a talk on sound, I felt a bit better, now having been taught about different sound styles and ways that sound can affect the audiences' response to a film. Following our talk, we got into groups that we would work with in creating our one minute sound journey.

The group discussed many different ideas, we wanted the piece to be full of a variety of sounds that would make it seem more realistic. Eventually we concluded on doing our sound project, of the journey of a cat going to the vets to be nurtured. We thought that this idea would be quite unusual and different to what anyone else was doing in the class. Following a short crit on friday with other groups, it was evident that a lot of groups wanted to focus on tragic times which often resulted in death as it would evoke emotion. However we thought that our sound journey idea, could also still evoke plenty of emotion as a lot of people have had to take their pets to the vets for some reason and for some it can be a emotion time. We also felt that we could be playful with this piece and add a whole range of sounds. Over the weekend we all assigned each other with certain sounds to record, so that we could begin making the piece on the monday of the second week.
